What
is SRF (Soot Removal Film)?
SRF is a new innovative product that BELFOR has developed for specialist decontamination or structures. SRF is a natural liquid latex based product with 7 ingredients which looks like PVA Glue. Unlike similar products it does not relay on ammonia to ‘Cure it’ and therefore can be safely used indoors without extra health and safety precautions. Extensive development and testing has resulted in an excellent and unique product that provides an efficient and cost effective solution for the decontamination of walls, ceilings and similar surfaces.
How and where can it be utilised?
A thin layer of SRF is sprayed or painted on to the contaminated surface and left to dry for between 10-40 hours dependant on ambient temperature and humidity. Once dry it can be peeled away in sheet form, revealing a clean surface free from contaminants. The dried latex film can then be disposed of as normal waste, providing the contamination contains no hazardous substances. When used on asbestos cement the dried film must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
It is a quick effective solution for the removal of soot or other everyday contamination such as pollution and dirt on the outside of buildings. This product was originally developed for the restoration of building such as churches and monuments and due to the nature of the product works particularly effectively on exposed brickwork, ceilings or detailed stone work including uneven or curved surfaces, where other, more traditional methods such as wet washing or jet washing would not achieve such a high quality finish, it reduces labour costs and gives a quick and effective result.
Another use for SRF is to create a ‘clean room’ or to bind loose materials such as soot, loose or falling ash or dust, so other remediation works can continue unhindered.

Why use SRF?
As opposed to traditional methods SRF covers large areas quickly and does not create mess like traditional wet washing techniques. This creates less disruption, and reduces access equipment requirements and this in turn the length of the job will be reduced. The advantage of SRF is that there is also the option to decontaminate sections/areas at a time (as demonstrated in the Barloworld case study).
